Bad Ischl is situated in the federal state of Upper Austria in the heart of the Salzkammergut region.
Bad Ischl then and now
In the early 19th century, the healing power of the mineral water springs in and around Bad Ischl was discovered, and the small, sleepy and remote alpine town soon became an extremely popular spa and health resort. The Kaiser Villa (the Imperial Villa), which was the former summer residence of Emperor Franz Josef, and the famous “k.u.k. Hofkonditorei Zauner” (Zauner Café and Pastry Shop - “Imperial and Royal Pastry Shop to the Court”) with its sweet specialities, have contributed to making Bad Ischl particularly well-known. Today the character and reputation of an imperial city still remains, and at every turn visitors encounter memories and recollections of a bygone age when history was written in Bad Ischl. The Kaiser Villa is a magnet which attracts fans of the monarchy and “Sisi” (Elisabeth, Empress of Austria) followers.
Today, Bad Ischl is a popular holiday resort and destination for outings or excursions. Bad Ischl is an important convention city, and its Congress and Theatre House has excellent facilities featuring modern conference rooms, a gastronomic infrastructure and overnight accommodation.

Other highlights are the k.u.k. wine village in the “Kurpark” (the spa’s municipal gardens), where top winemakers present their very best wines in an open air culinary festival, the “Shake The Lake Festival” (Boogie Woogie & Blues Festival).
In August there is a gala in the Congress and Theatre House to celebrate Emperor Franz Josef’s birthday.
In October the Lehar Theatre hosts a royal banquet - a historical dinner show, entertainment with international musical stars, fascinating acrobats, ballet interludes and a meal prepared by the highly decorated chef and proprietor of the Schratt Villa.
Bad Ischl has its own particular charm in wintertime, too. Enjoy a romantic sleigh ride through snow-covered countryside, or take a stroll through the festively decorated town centre and admire the work of the craftsmen and women of Bad Ischl and the nearby towns and villages at the Christmas markets. The Salzkammergut Advent with Miguel Herz-Kestranek is a highlight of the pre-Christmas season.
