Water sports

The Salzkammergut lake district has a total of 76 lakes and numerous rivers and brooks. The water is sparkling, crystal clear and of the highest quality.

The region offers a wide choice of water sports: sailing, wind-surfing, boating, water skiing, diving and swimming. Or if you prefer, you can just relax in the sun on the lakeside beaches.

The swimming areas feature water slides and chutes, sunbathing areas, barbecue areas and much more – everything the heart desires.

Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee), one of the most famous lakes in the Salzkammergut region, is only a few kilometres from Bad Ischl. This idyllic lake was where parts of “The Sound of Music” was filmed. Lake Wolfgang is one of the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut region, its crystal clear water reaching an average temperature of 24°C in the summer months.

Traunsee
is a 20 minute drive from Bad Ischl. The Romans called Lake Traunsee “lacus felix” – “the lucky lake”.

Hallstättersee Lake is a quiet, picturesque lake located in the midst of a region which has a very long history. The oldest part of the Salzkammergut region, the village of Hallstatt, has been moulded by a 7,000 year old cultural history of salt: Hallstatt has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for Cultural and Natural Heritage since 1997.

Langbathsee Lake is only a 20 minute drive from Bad Ischl in a nature reserve at the foot of the Höllengebirge (“the mountains of hell”). The lake’s water is crystal clear and of drinking water quality. A stunning mountain backdrop provides the perfect setting for Emperor Franz Josef’s former hunting lodge on the shores of the lake.
